Java^TM Advanced Imaging Image I/O Tools

JAI Image I/O Tools provides reader, writer, and stream plug-ins for the Java^TM Image I/O Framework and Image I/O-based read and write operations for Java^TM Advanced Imaging. Reader-writer plug-ins are supplied for the BMP, JPEG, JPEG 2000, PNG, PNM, Raw, TIFF, and WBMP image formats; a writer plug-in is supplied for the GIF image format (a GIF reader plug-in is supplied de facto by J2SE). The supplied streams and associated service providers use the New I/O APIs. Please refer to the JAI Image I/O Tools API documentation for more information.

Limitations

Some reader/writer plug-ins have known limitations which are described in this section.

BMP

Can decode bmp images with version 3-5. Can encode only version 3 images.

JPEG

Cannot decode or encode progressive JPEG images: the J2SE core JPEG reader and writer plug-ins should be used respectively to read or write progressive JPEG images.
The reader plug-in does not support stream metadata and the writer plug-in supports neither stream nor image metadata. Support for metadata may be ascertained by querying the appropriate methods of the ImageReaderSpi or ImageWriterSpi which provides the reader or writer. These ServiceProviders are themselves obtained from the IIORegistry. If reading stream metadata or writing stream or image metadata is required, then the Java^TM SE JPEG image reader or writer, respectively, should be used instead.

JPEG 2000

Supports bilevel images, multi-band images with a type of byte/ushort/short (including gray-scale, RGB, RGBA, and GA (gray-alpha) images), and color-indexed images with 256 colors.

PNG

Does not support data having 2 or 4 bits per sample. The core J2SE PNG plug-ins should be used for these bit depths.

PNM

Supports bilevel, color-indexed (writer only), grayscale, and RGB images.

Raw

Supports any data defined by ComponentSampleModel, SinglePixelPackedSampleModel and bilevel MultiPixelPackedSampleModel.

TIFF

The writer plug-in does not support old-style (TIFF 6.0) JPEG compression.

Issues

The reports of bugs and enhancement requests currently on file for JAI Image I/O Tools may be obtained by

searching the Java Developer Connection Bug Database on Category "JAI is Advanced Imaging" and State "Open" (JAI Image I/O Tools bugs are those with subcategory of "codec_imageio" or "codeclib"); or
querying the jai-imageio-core project Issue Tracker.

The Java Developer Connection bug database contains the change requests reported for JAI Image I/O Tools before it was moved to a java.net project in February 2005 as well as issues specific to the web pages which are part of the JAI Home Page tree. Some problems continue to be recorded via this database.

The java.net issue tracker contains issue reports which were filed after JAI Image I/O Tools was moved to java.net as well as some issues which were migrated from the Java Developer Connection bug database. Issues are migrated as they become identified as the most likely targets for being fixed at the next milestone. The content of migrated issue reports will in general initially be only a link back to the Java Developer Connection bug database record.
